Starting in April 2020 after the Coronavirus pandemic began, the Derby West Indian Community Association’s Covid Kitchen has delivered freshly cooked Caribbean meals twice a week to the elderly community in Derby.
The cooks, Iona and Jackie, work tirelessly to provide quality Caribbean food. Their menu often combines classic West Indian favourites such as Jerk Chicken and Saturday Soup with classic English deserts like Bakewell Tarts and Apple Crumble.
Volunteer drivers from across Derby have offered their services to help deliver the tasty meals. These drivers often provide a nice chat and check up for the elderly recipients.
The project has been a roaring success and would not have been possible without the support of our funders- the Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) and Big Lottery and donors to the project, like Rolls Royce Unite Union and our generous DWICA membership.
Meals are delivered to over 60 households in Derby on Wednesdays and Saturdays and we are always willing to take on new recipients and volunteers. If interested please call us on 01332 371529 and ask for Nezrine.
