The Derby West Indian Community Association (DWICA) is a voluntary run community organisation which exists to provide services for the Black and Culturally Diverse community of Derby. DWICA has been running for over 50 years on a mainly voluntary basis, but we now employ staff and have an excellent track record and experience in staff recruitment, management and supervision.
In the past we have run a School Exclusion project, Outreach youth service, talent shows and youth club.
Within the Community Centre, some of the other services we provide or host include: An annual youth conference, annual summer school, annual Caribbean carnival, carnival costume design and make workshops, music and dance workshops, activities for Black History Month and annual Christmas dinner. The Community Centre is also available for hire for functions and activities.
Although the Derby West Indian Community Association does not give legal advice, we signpost members to where they can seek advice on welfare, housing, immigration and nationality issues.
Members’ subscription fees become payable from the 1st of April each year.
Once an individual has been a member for a period of six months they are then entitled to vote at the Annual General Meeting and are also able to serve on the Management Committee.
The voluntary Management Committee, comprising of six elected Officers and 14 Committee members, are elected by the membership at the Annual General Meeting.
Management Committee Meetings are held in the Community Centre the third Friday of every month at 7.00 pm, except for the months of August and December.
